Current Sunday Sermon Series

Getting Real with God

As unusual as it may sound, the most compelling thing about Jesus was His realness. No one was as real as Jesus. The Gospel writers record story after story of a Jesus Who made no pretense, Who didn’t put on airs. The Jesus we meet in the Bible is disarming, always speaking the truth no matter whom it might offend.

Predictably, not everyone appreciated Jesus’ frankness. Nothing bothers pretenders more than those who insist on keeping it real. The Pharisees were chief among those who objected to Jesus’ realness. They squirmed whenever Christ pulled back the curtain on their hypocritical form of legalism. They squirmed and they hated Him for exposing them. It was, in the end, Jesus’ realness that set the stage for His crucifixion.

But it was also Jesus’ realness that made Him so effective with seekers. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus challenges each of us to get real with God. This is because when we get real, really real, it finally dawns on us that grace was our only option all along. Getting real is the prelude to getting grace!
